Brave New World Narrative Assignment
Philosophy, morals, evil, good, right, wrong, inspiration, beauty, ugliness, purity, love,
hate corruption, normal, abnormal, and God: these are just a few things that manifest themselves
in the realms of human thought as subjective concepts. They are innate ideas that are left to us to
define and give meaning and significance to. They are the tools that are used to make cultures,
standards and values. Among the most influential of these is the idea of God. It is the
interpretation of who he is, what he “says”, what he “thinks”, his teachings, and how he “lives”
that have resulted in the rise and destruction of empires, the slaughter or salvation of millions,
the stability or total and utter chaos in a society. God has been made a force so powerful that he
plays or has played an enormous part in every person’s life. I have two ideas of what God is and
both take into account how he is interpreted by other people, how he conflicts with my current
beliefs and how I connect with him personally.
I think that God can be defined as an anchor for society. In this sense God can be any
number of things. It can be a spiritual entity, a physical object or even a sensation. As long as
people are able to project their definitions of morality and values onto it, it won’t matter. Society
is built around, and works because of the practiced moral values that people consider their own.
For example, the United States was built around the ideas of courage, honesty, integrity and
compassion, and, to a certain extent, they are what has made this country so successful. I think
that this is applicable to any humans anywhere. An issue that comes from this system is being
able to keep these ideas fresh and durable. Humans are aware of their own imperfections and the
fact that they change. They needed something to use as a standard for the values that they had
while building and maintaining a successful society. A God can embody all of those things and
be passed down from generation to generation-in order to preserve their ideologies. I think that
this presents a reasonable explanation for what God is, why he exists and why he is so important
to us. God plays the active role of the symbol of perfection in any society and remains there to be
used as a reference for any moral or valuable conflicts that need to be solved for the betterment
Although I do think that God does function as a psychological stabilizer in our lives and
in society, I also think that, in reality, his definition goes much deeper. I struggled for a very long
time with having to believe in God because of all that it meant to believe in God. To me it was a
choice between science and religion. After some interesting experiences, I got past that conflict
after I understood the true nature of their relationship and that their conflict, for the most part, is
just an illusion. After that, new questions came up. As I said before, God is a subjective
experience, and it is from that same interpretation that we derive religion. There are an infinite
number of religions and religious beliefs, and therefore and infinite number of definitions of
God. The imminent question that arises from this fact is whom to believe? It is a question that
comes from observing other people judge, or criticize the ideas and beliefs that you build your
platform of faith with, and also from observing other religions and beliefs with an open mind and
wondering what the difference between you and them is. Everyone is so sure of his or her faith.
What makes you right and them wrong, or the other way around? God means so many things to
so many different people. Those differences come from their difference in morals and standards,
which are created by the interpretation of the subjective those innate concepts, which are unique
to every single individual. In short, it is impossible to determine whom to believe. That is why
God has no definition but the one that you make for him. Many people can’t understand this and
hate due to differences is born from the ignorance. I would rather reject everything else than
believe in something halfway, or blindly. I have trouble associating religion with God. They are
two completely different things now.
The only choice I have now is to seek what he is on my own and to separate him from
religion. When I really embrace the idea of God as a subjective concept, everything makes sense
and he finally becomes something meaningful to me. I’ve come to think of h as a divine power
that presents itself to everyone in a different way and this is why there are so many beliefs of
whom or what he is. This being said, I would like to go into my personal definition of God. God,
for me, is a source of my values and strength. God is the inexplicable feeling of emotional and
physical safety and security. God is tranquility when I am at my lowest and no earthly comfort,
including love, can appease me. God is the confidence to be able to live the way that I want to
without fear. God is what gives me the ability to connect spiritually with nature and art. God is
my connection to my culture, and my family, living or dead. What is the definition of God? God
is the inner peace that allows me to live.
